Class last night

Well, Su and I actually got to class last night!  Haven’t been for aaagggeeeesss…  went mostly cuz it was Shane’s first class under his new dance school SwingIt!.

It was all good with the tempo being a bit nicer and faster in the second class from 8-9.  Met new follows that I hadn’t before since we haven’t been round the lindy scene much lately.  But boy I can see how unfit I am!  I was pretty sore this morning!  Well done to Shane and Mel B and also great news that Trev and Sharon will be helping out teaching too!

We wondered again whether we’ll ever be able to teach one day, but I reckon our foundation/technique is still lacking.  Plus, we don’t have the time!

DJing this Sunday – a busy day!

Been asked by Michelle if I can DJ this Sunday at the Speakeasy.

It’ll be a busy day since Su has a function in Success, and I’ll probably follow her with the kids down there to see Hip Mo Toast.  Then there’s Idol, and gotta get kids ready for school again on Monday.  I’ll do it though!  Haven’t done a swing DJ gig since August Speakeasy and I’ve got a few new albums to spin!  See ya there Sunday!!

* Duke Ellington’s Ko-Ko and Take the A Train albums (Dreyfus)
* Jazz in Britain
* Spike Hughes
* Duke Ellington’s Blanton-Webster Band

and new stuff from last time like

* Lil Hardin Armstrong and Her Orchestra
* Julia Lee and Her Boyfriends – Kansas City’s First Lady of the Blues

Hmm..  prob too late to put in another order to get by Sunday..  there’s always emusic though.

First wedding DJ experience

Well, it was our friends Miranda and Mike’s wedding on Saturday, and I was lucky enough to be asked to DJ the night!

I spent all week preparing since I knew this was going to be quite a different experience than DJ’ing a swing night.  I got all my music in order (lots of 80s stuff, as requested by the bridge and groom).  No BPMs though, I was going to go more by the feel!

It all went quite well. I did have 1 technical hiccup though, damn my portable CD player for not working as a backup!  Only 2-3 minutes of music downtime 😦

But one major difference for me was the in between song thing.  On a swing night, the song finishes, and I find I can wait up to quite a few seconds until putting on the next song if I want – since people usually take their partners off the floor and get ready to ask for another dance, etc.

However, on Sat night, when one song finishes, everyone is just standing there, like waiting!  I didn’t do any realtime mixing between songs, so it was like “Oh! People are just waiting on the dance floor – I better put on the next tune right away!”.  Hmmm..  Maybe it’s a symptom of not having a partner dance.

Anyway, it all seemed OK in the end, floor had dancers for nearly the whole evening and even one of their friends, a DJ, said well done at the end.  All over now!  Note to self – have a backup CD player working next time!
